Plans and A little Advertising

Hello, Kate here,

Updates

To anyone who still visits this blog, we are in fact, alive. =P I have some plans for revamping this place a bit.

1.)   We are re-evaluating the purpose of the blog and will be changing the general content of our posts.

2.)   We will probably be focussing more on dissolving cultural lies than on devotions. Though if there is              interest we can continue doing that.

3.)    I may be messing around with the template, so don't be alarmed if things move around.

4.)    We will be looking for guest posts in the future. If that is something you would be interested in, start thinking about ideas now.

My Blog

And now some shameless advertising.I have my own blog now. There, I post poems, short stories, my thoughts on writing and on life in general. Please come check me out. :) Here is a portion of my latest post and link to read the rest of it.

You are boarding on a train. You don't know where it's going, just know that it's moving forward through  the wasteland of  lies, pain, shame, and brokenness. This journey is not for the one who is easily swayed, the one who sees no wrong in their world. It is not for those who are content to live peacefully in this warped reflection of reality. You settle in a seat next to a window. Rain drops spatter the glass. Sliding down through the grime, they gather on the ledge under the pane, then hurl to the cracked earth below. You wrest your gaze from the window and look at the others who will be joining you. Their expressions are somber and when you meet their eyes they nod appreciatively. All who have come know that the way will be difficult.  There will be no retreat. Some will jump when the wanderlust is gone, look for a new adventure, but they will  fall deeper than they ever were into the damaged life they left behind......[Read more here]

Hey,
Keziah
here, I thought it might time to update you guys on the truth seekers blog. As
I get older I realize how important it is to have daily devotions, I also find
that as I get older it harder to find time to spend time with Christ. In
1 Thessalonians 5:11 (ESV) it says “Therefore
encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.” That is
what started this blog, and we hope that this blog will be an encouragement to
you also.
John
dougan has started a study on acts. Here is the introduction to his study.
Hi, John here
Ok, so I'm trying a new thing on here where I'm going to go through the book of
Acts in the Bible. I'm going to be going through about a chapter or two every
week. If you would like you can join me on this new and exciting journey as we
look at stories and try to look at things in new ways. My goal is not to give
you a sermon, but to study along with companions and try to:
1. find new ways that God might be speaking to us.
2. Scrutinize cool stories in great detail.
3. Find versus that can uplift each other and encourage our walk with God.
4. Learn more about God.
I would love it if you would join me in this great adventure through Acts.
P.S. Sometimes you will be lost if you don't follow along weekly.
I would encourage you all to check
it out.

Also I am hoping to start a study on Luke; the
point of this study is to:
grow closer to Christ
understand in a deeper way what
is means to live like Jesus
uplift and encourage each other
in our walk with Christ
help hold each other
accountable for our daily devotions
I hope that throughout this
Christmas season that we will realize how much we are loved by our creator, and
that we will also enjoy spending time with family and this time off school as
we celebrate Jesus’s birth this Christmas season.
Merry Christmas, Keziah Lawson for
the whole truth seekers clan

Acts Study!

Hi, John here
Ok, so I'm trying a new thing on here where I'm going to go through the book of Acts in the Bible. I'm going to be going through about a chapter or two every week. If you would like you can join me on this new and exciting journey as we look at stories and try to look at things in new ways. My goal is not to give you a sermon, but to study along with companions and try to:
1. find new ways that God might be speaking to us.
2. scrutinize cool stories in great detail.
3. find versus that can uplift each other and encourage our walk with God.
4. learn more about God.
I would love it if you would join me in this great adventure through Acts.
P.S. Sometimes you will be lost if you don't follow along weekly.

The first thing i noticed was verse 1:8. It says "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." (NIV) So i wondered for a minute what does that have to do with me that these random people will go around the earth and bring the good news to everyone. So i looked at the areas on the map just for fun and found out the location of all them. Jerusalem is kind of self-explanatory; it's a city that's well known. Judea is the region where the city of Jerusalem is located. Samaria is a region north of Judea. The ends of the earth is......well.........yeah you get the point. It's kind of random, but this is what i came up with. Those of us who have the Holy Spirit (or believe in Jesus Christ) are to go to one or more of those areas (Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the ends of the earth.) Now I'm not saying that you have to go to one of those areas literally it's just......welll......this:
Jerusalem= The city we live in.
Judea= The country or state that you live in.
Samaria= The neighboring states or countries that we live near.
The ends of the earth= well...... everywhere else.
We are all called by God to be a light on to the world, that means any of these areas. Maybe look at your life and see if you are doing one of these things that God has called you to do. (I know that right now were young and going to a foreign country does seem a little messed up right now, but think about what God's asking you to do.

Then i really liked the chapter "The Holy Spirit comes at Pentecost. I love this story! :) Pentecost= Jews from around the world, gather together in the city of Jerusalem. Now when the Holy Spirit came upon them, the Jews from all around the world (speaking many different languages) could understand them in their own native language. How awesome is that!? And not only that, but the Jews realized that most of the men that were speaking were Galileans. (What does that mean to us? Well Galilee is a small, coastal, city that had a lot to do with fishing and not extremely high educational skills. Not that they could be smart, but they weren't simply known for being smart.) So when the Jews hear these "Galileans" speaking in fluent languages from across the globe, that's kind of scary and makes you kind of listen, don't you think? Then after they get made fun of, Peter is so beast! At the end of that God-filled day, three thousand people were saved! That's a lot of people! And it's so comforting that they didn't do that on their own. They didn't do that because they were well learned people that could speak very cogently and persuade people easily. It was all God! Personally that's a comforting fact that i don't do anything, just let God use me as long as I'm available.

Then one last small thing is I like how all the believers were like one huge family (which they were.) I mean i don't necessarily share all my belongings with other believers or I'm not always good at sharing food. And i love how they are constantly in prayer with each other. So cool! :)

So yeah that is a basic idea of how i will do this. Please jump in on anything you want. I would love to hear what you found from these versus. What caught your attention and stuff. And continue to join me please as i go through Acts.

Trick or Treat?

IMORTANT NOTE: although we encourage awareness of Halloween and its origins, we ask you to please not research it in depth. The witchcraft and satanic practices are still real today, and learning about them can be very deadly to a believer, or anyone for that matter.
Hey all, I thought that since it's halloween today, and not many people are aware of it's origins a post about might be in order, so we're taking a quick break from the meditation series to post this. :)
I’ve heard several opinions on Halloween. Some people believe that it is an evil holiday and Christians should avoid it and everything to do with it like the plague, others think that it’s a good opportunity to dress up, get candy and have some harmless fun. I myself have enjoyed dressing up and going trick or treating, but I also know that the origins of Halloween aren’t that great. So let’s take a look at the holiday’s history.
Halloween was first celebrated about 2,000 years ago as the Celtic festival of Samhain. The Celts celebrated their new year on November 1, the day marked the end of summer and harvest and the beginning of the freezing winter, which was usually associated with death. They believed that the night before the New Year the boundaries between the living and the dead are blurred. They believed that on the night of October 31 ghosts of the dead would return to earth, they thought that the spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests predict the future. Druids would build gargantuan, sacred fires where people would burn crops, animals and sometimes humans as sacrifices to the Celtic deities. The people would gather in celebration, they would dress up in costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and try to tell each others fortunes. It is said that if a person did not give sacrifices to the spirits that they would be punished, but if they did give to them they would be rewarded, thus the modern “Trick or Treat”. It is also said that the spirits would posses the people.
• On All Souls Day in England the poor would go around asking people for food, and in return would pray for the souls of their dead relatives. At the time it widely believed that a person’s soul could not enter heaven until it was prayed for. The Christian church encouraged this to replace the practice of leaving food and drink out for the spirits. The poor people would be given “soul cakes”, pastries for the people who promised to pray for the dead.

• What about jack o’lanterns? How did they start? The early Celtic people were said to take embers from the sacred fires and bring them to their homes to start their fires. They would carry them in hollowed out turnips or gourds. The Irish myth that gave the jack o’lantern its name, says that a man know as “Stingy Jack”, who was swindler and a drunk, invited the devil to have a drink with him. Apparently Jack was able to convince the devil to change himself into a coin so he could buy the drink. The trickster took the coin and placed it in his pocket next to a silver cross which trapped the devil and prevented him from changing back. Eventually Jack freed him on the condition that he would leave him alone for a year. After a year had passed, Jack managed to trick the devil into climbing a tree to retrieve some fruit, while the devil was up in the tree Jack carved a cross in it, once again trapping him. This time Jack freed him on the condition that he’d stop seeking his soul. When Jack died, he was not accepted into heaven because of his wrong doings, neither was he accepted into hell because the devil would not go back on his deal. According to the story the devil took pity on Jack and gave him an ember in a hollowed out turnip to carry on his lonesome wanderings of the earth. People in Ireland and Scotland would make jack o’lanterns to ward off Stingy Jack and other restless spirits. Creepy isn't it?

So now that we know a little about the history of Hollows Eve, what does the Bible have to say about it?

Ephesians 5:7-11
Therefore do not be partners with them. For you are light in the Lord. Live as children of the light. (For the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.

Also…

Deuteronomy 18:10-12
Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord; because of these same detestable practices the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you.
More Verses:
2 Corinthians 6:16-18
2 Corinthians 7:1
Jeremiah 10:2
Galatians 5:19-20
1 Corinthians 10:20, 21
1Thesolonians 5:21
Romans 12:2

According to these verses we should not have anything to with the ways of the world, but does that mean trick or treating is wrong? That we shouldn’t carve Jack o’lanterns? I think that what it all comes down to is your heart, and what is distracting to you. Now obviously the origins of Halloween are quite evil, but I don’t think that necessarily means we can’t get together to dress up and eat candy. So now that I’ve told you all these facts, verses and what I think, what’s your opinion?

Questions to Ponder:
Do you think that people really consorted with evil spirits?
What about the story of Stingy Jack, is there any truth in it?
What does all this mean to Christians, what are we to do about Halloween?
How can we avoid falling into ways that are evil?
How can we encourage one another in the ways of God?
Do you think that people still consort with evil spirits? If so what should a Christian do when you meet one?
Please leave your answers, thoughts and any questions you might have in the comment box. Go!
